Another Hawk

Dear Old Wren,

I had a hawk visiting my yard too. He looks like the hawk you saw in the Backyard Bird Watch. I stayed far away.

Lizard Finds Some Mushrooms

Dear Old Wren,

Today I found some mushrooms, but I won't eat them for breakfast. They are not the kind of mushrooms that you can eat. They are the kind of mushrooms that are just beautiful to look at.

Also, lizards don't eat mushrooms.

Love,
Lizard

A Poem By Lizard

Little Skink

Little skink with nose so pink,
with wriggly tail and eyes that blink,
where are you going on tiny feet?
Do you have another skink to meet?
Little skink, if you will stay,
I’ll feed you worms and bugs all day.
If you agree, then give me a wink.
Little skink, what do you think?

A Lizard of a Different Color

Dear Old Wren and Friends,

It's getting warm here, and my friends and I all like to sit outside and enjoy the sun.

Here is a fellow I saw yesterday, a little brown lizard.

As he moved around, looking for bugs to eat, he started to look a little more green.

Then he got even greener.

By the time he had climbed up to this blue door, he had turned a beautiful bright green. Did you know that lizards can change color? We turn green when we're happy, or warm, or when we just feel like it.

Look how green this lizard got! He was looking around for a place to hide.
He finally found a hiding place in a crack between the door and the wall. If you look closely, you can just see the tip of his tail poking out in the corner.

Well, I am going out to bask in the sun some more.

A Bird in a Fur Coat

Dear Old Wren and Friends,

Yesterday I saw this big black bird stretching her wings in the sun.

It was the anhinga. She lives near the water like a duck, but she doesn't have waterproof feathers like a duck. The feathers on her body are little and fluffy. They look more like fur than feathers. Every time she gets wet, she has to come back up and air-dry.

Up close, it looks like she's wearing a mink stole and blue eyeshadow.

The drier she gets, the furrier she looks. Once she finishes drying her feathers, she's ready to dive into the water and catch a fish. And then she will be back in the sun, showing off her furry feathers.

Lizard Finds Some Shelter

Dear Wren,

It's raining here today, but it doesn't really bother me. I can easily fit under a leaf or in a small crevice, and to be honest, that's where I've been spending most of my time lately anyway. I probably won't get out much until it starts getting hot outside.
Other animals aren't so lucky. This wet and bedraggled squirrel has been outside looking for food all afternoon.

I've seen him hiding in the hollow part of this tree, but he wasn't there today.

Sometimes he sits high up in the tree, where the leaves and branches give him some shelter from the rain, but he wasn't there today either.

He sat in the rain nibbling on seeds for a long time, and then I saw him jump up on the fence. He shook himself like a dog, ran his front paws over his face a few times, and then went right back to his rainy lunch.
What do you do when it rains?

A Letter From A Lizard

Dear Wren,

It looks like it's cold where you live. Here in the south, it's sunny and warm.

This morning I got to bask in the sun at my favorite lake. The egret and sea gulls were also enjoying the warm weather.

The ducks like to sunbathe while standing on one leg. They stay that way for hours. I don't know how they do it.

But they seem to enjoy it. You have to admire birds who can hold that pose for so long and look so calm.

I prefer to keep all four legs underneath me, where they belong.
Love,
Lizard
