Where's Winter?

Hey! Somebody left that door open! Better close it right away.
Cold air will get in....wait a minute. That's not cold air outside.
It might even be warmer outside than inside today.
What happened to Winter? It's still December. It's still not the right time for warm weather.
I guess Winter is taking a little holiday too.

Scotty's Christmas

Scotty and his neighbor Snooper were excited when I went to the barn today.
Something had happened on Christmas eve.

Someone left a stocking hanging on Scotty's stall door.
Snooper had one too. They could hardly wait to see what was inside.
Someone knew just what Scotty would like to find in his stocking.
It was carrots and candy canes!
Happy horse!
Now you know that Santa comes to the barn too.

Cold Blue Heron

Hey! What are you doing here in December, Blue Heron? The pond is all iced over and the frogs are sleeping down in the mud.
What are you going to eat now?
I think you had better move on south before it really snows.

Old Tree Down

This morning Socks got to explore the top of a tree and she didn't even have to do any climbing. It was an old dead tree up by Granddad's garden. We found it flat on the ground. Woodpeckers and nuthatches liked that old tree. They made holes all over it digging out insects to eat.
The wood was pretty rotten and it smashed to pieces when it fell.
I guess we'll let it lie there for the winter. Maybe there are still insects inside it and the birds will find them for winter food. Maybe something will find shelter here when the winter winds blow.
Socks and I will keep checking it out.

Sunset

Last night I looked out of the window just as the sun was going down.
Usually the light from the setting sun doesn't reach the waterfall.
But now that it's December, the sun is in just the right place. The water looked as if it had fire in it.

Lending a hand

Look in the crabapple tree. You can see the birdfeeder.
Now look at the hook holding it up.
Doesn't it look as if the tree has put out a hand to hold it?

I see a thumb sticking up, and a little finger sticking out, and the hook across the palm of the hand.

Maybe this tree is really an Ent...

December begins

December brings the end of Fall.
Next comes Winter.
Winter is the season for snow and cold weather, so it was not surprising that snow began to fall this weekend.
It isn't much snow - just a dusting on the grass and a lining on the branches. Sparkly bits of snow are floating in the air.
Brrrrrr!
I had better get out my boots. Where is my scarf? Has anyone seen the other one of my pair of mittens? Time to get ready for cold weather!
