SSSSSnake

Shhh. Be quiet and still and you'll see someone sneaking around the pond.

She's very shy. When she sees us she moves swiftly.

She coils in a sort of knot and thinks we might not spy her.

Look quickly - we only have a minute before she slithers silently away. She's scared of us.

See her stripes? She's Garter Snake.

Mushrooms at last!

Here we go sneaking through the woods...looking for mushrooms. What's that beside your boot?
It's a MUSHROOM!
Finally! We found mushrooms!
Cut them off carefully.
I can hardly wait to eat them!

A Poem By Lizard

Little Skink

Little skink with nose so pink,
with wriggly tail and eyes that blink,
where are you going on tiny feet?
Do you have another skink to meet?
Little skink, if you will stay,
I’ll feed you worms and bugs all day.
If you agree, then give me a wink.
Little skink, what do you think?

So not a mushroom

Now, what is that? Is it a mushroom?
Is it some trash? Get a little closer and take a look.
It's like some strange deep-sea creature.
Yes, it is alive!
That is an extremely weird fungus growing on this little tree.

Still not a mushroom

I went looking for a mushroom, but I didn't find a mushroom. I found this. Does it look like a doughnut? Yes! A very hard doughnut - it is really a rock.
I can't eat that for breakfast.
Will I ever find a mushroom?

Also not a mushroom

I went looking for a mushroom, but I didn't find a mushroom. I found this. Such sharp prickles! It's bark and thorns from a locus tree.
Can't eat that for breakfast.

Not a mushroom

I went looking for a mushroom, but I didn't find a mushroom.
I found an empty shell. That was a box turtle shell.
Can't eat that for breakfast!

A mysterious egg

Is anybody missing an egg? I found it lying on the ground down by the pond this morning. Just a little white egg all by itself.
I wonder whose egg it might be?

A Lizard of a Different Color

Dear Old Wren and Friends,

It's getting warm here, and my friends and I all like to sit outside and enjoy the sun.

Here is a fellow I saw yesterday, a little brown lizard.

As he moved around, looking for bugs to eat, he started to look a little more green.

Then he got even greener.

By the time he had climbed up to this blue door, he had turned a beautiful bright green. Did you know that lizards can change color? We turn green when we're happy, or warm, or when we just feel like it.

Look how green this lizard got! He was looking around for a place to hide.
He finally found a hiding place in a crack between the door and the wall. If you look closely, you can just see the tip of his tail poking out in the corner.

Well, I am going out to bask in the sun some more.
Love,
Lizard

The new rock

There is a new rock down by the pond. Isn't it a nice tall one?
Ha! I fooled you!

It's not really a rock! It's a rock-shaped cover to cover up the post with the electrical outlet on it.

Don't tell anyone. We'll see if we can fool someone else with it.

A Bird in a Fur Coat

Dear Old Wren and Friends,

Yesterday I saw this big black bird stretching her wings in the sun.

It was the anhinga. She lives near the water like a duck, but she doesn't have waterproof feathers like a duck. The feathers on her body are little and fluffy. They look more like fur than feathers. Every time she gets wet, she has to come back up and air-dry.

Up close, it looks like she's wearing a mink stole and blue eyeshadow.

The drier she gets, the furrier she looks. Once she finishes drying her feathers, she's ready to dive into the water and catch a fish. And then she will be back in the sun, showing off her furry feathers.
Love,
Lizard

House cleaning

It's time to clean houses! Not just one house - all the bird houses.
We need to take the old nests out of the bird boxes so the birds can build new ones.
If you look inside the hole, you can tell that this box is pretty full.
How can we clean it out? We'll take off the side.
Just look at that nest!
There are lots of houses on the fence. We have to clean them all out.
We're going to put a new one up in this tree.
There it is - ready for a little bird to move in.

Of course, some birds make their own houses. Who do you think will live in this hole?

Quacking

Lizard took us to visit Lake Ella. As we walked around the lake we heard "peep! peep! peep!"
It was baby ducks - little ducklings. They were playing in the water beside their mother. I walked down close to them to take a picture. Then I heard something behind me. "Quonk!" I turned around - there was the Drake, the daddy duck.
He was keeping an eye on me.
