A Bird in a Fur Coat

Dear Old Wren and Friends,

Yesterday I saw this big black bird stretching her wings in the sun.

It was the anhinga. She lives near the water like a duck, but she doesn't have waterproof feathers like a duck. The feathers on her body are little and fluffy. They look more like fur than feathers. Every time she gets wet, she has to come back up and air-dry.

Up close, it looks like she's wearing a mink stole and blue eyeshadow.

The drier she gets, the furrier she looks. Once she finishes drying her feathers, she's ready to dive into the water and catch a fish. And then she will be back in the sun, showing off her furry feathers.
