Spring cleaning and what I found

Yesterday was almost warm. I decided to empty the old bird nests out of the bird houses. This way the bird houses will be clean and ready for new birds to move in and build new nests.
Remember when we did this last year?

I found old nests in 8 of the houses. Some were made of moss and some of sticks. One nest still had three little eggs in it.
I wonder what bird lays little pink spotted eggs.
I wonder why they didn't hatch?

Robin visits

Look, it's the first Robin of Spring! Or is it the last Robin of Fall? "Ha! Fooled you," says Robin. "I'm your year-round Robin.
And thanks for the sumack berries."

Squirrel protests

"If you must know," says Squirrel. "I am NOT disapproving." "I am ignoring you," says Squirrel.
"If I do not pay you any attention, maybe you will go away."

A Note From Lizard

Dear Old Wren,

In Florida we have Disapproving Seagulls.

An early song

In the morning I hear someone singing "peter-peter-peter". It is a loud and clear call. Who is singing in the cold and snow? There he is! It's little Tufted Titmouse.
Sing away, little bird. You make me think about Spring.

Weather predictions

On Groundhog's Day they say to watch for a groundhog to come up out of its hole.
In Germany it is a badger who comes out of its burrow on Feb. 2.
If the day is sunny and the animal sees its shadow, it goes back into its hole and there will be six more weeks of winter. If it is cloudy the animal will stay out and Spring will come early.

Socks is pretending to be the groundhog.

You can see that she does see her shadow.

She wanted to come right back inside.

And sure enough, today we have more Winter!

The wind blew the snow so hard that it scared the deer.

And we can't see our driveway again.
Do you think we'll have six more weeks of this?

It's melting

The outside is full of the sound of water.

The icicles are gone. The snow is melting. And the sun is shining on the puddles of cold water that used to be ice.
